Running EMR step gives 'Access denied in retrieving S3 data' error

I am using java sdk to launch a cluster and add a custom step. The step is to run a word count jar but I keep getting an error 'Access denied in retrieving S3 data'

I have ssh into the master and made sure default emr roles are enabled. I also tried modifying the role to "s3:*"

I also changed the permission on s3 bucket to 'everyone'

My s3 bucket looks like: s3://emrtestt/WordCount.jar s3://emrtestt/input/ s3://emrtestt/output/

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
