Cannot connect to elasticache from EC2 in peered VPC

I have an EC2 instance and an elasticache redis instance. They are in separate VPCs, but in my elasticache's security group, I have set up an inbound custom tcp rule at port 6379 and I have established an Active VPC peer connection between the two VPCs.

However, I can still not manage to connect to the elasticache node from inside my EC2 instance (I ssh into it and run redis-cli -h hub-redis-staging.a379zy.0001.usw1.cache.amazonaws.com -p 6379 )

What more can I do? Is this even possible? For some reason I also cannot create my EC2 instances inside my elasticache's VPC and vice versa, those options are just not available to me upon creation.
