Docker on AWS architecture

I'm curious about the Docker architecture on AWS. Does the Docker container live on the host OS or is a virtual machine spun up in which the Docker container lives in?

My guess would be that the Docker container is on the host OS directly as I've read that AWS provides 'native support' for Docker but I'd like to verify this.
