Azure snapshot with python

How can I create a VM snapshot on Azure using python?

I've easily did it on AWS with both boto and libcloud, but it seems like the only option for azure is using powershell, and that’s not an option for me right now.

Libcloud docs on azure didn’t help much (can list volumes, destroy snapshots, but nothing on creating them), and I didn’t manage to find anything on snapshotting in the azure sdk for python. Not much luck searching anywhere for this specific problem.
