htpasswd htaccess AWS linux not working Could not open password file

I am trying to setup password protection on a simple site. Im using linux from AWS free tier. I can get it to prompt for a username and password but then I get this error:

[Mon Jul 27 23:06:52.258983 2015] [authn_file:error] [pid 3755] (2)No such file or directory: [client 76.167.143.148:55381] AH01620: Could not open password file: /var/www/html/ .htpasswd

Here are the permissions set: -rw-rw-r-- 1 ec2-user www 100 Jul 27 22:59 .htaccess -rw-rw-r-- 1 apache www 43 Jul 27 22:58 .htpasswd

Any idea what I need to do?
