Is it possible to connect to an AWS server running mongo through mongoengine in Python with a .pem key?

I have been looking for good documentation but can't seem to find anything except using a ssl key to connect from mongo, not to it on the server. Would I have to connect to the ec2 Instance from python and then to the mongo database running there? Much thanks.
