AWS elastic load balancer not able to send traffic to ec2 instances without public ip

Was trying to send traffic to private ips using elastic load balancer.

Instance are attached to the load balancer but it says that it is unhealthy. Associating a public ip solves the problem though.

But we don't want the ec2 instances accessed directly via their ip, thats why we decided to not give them public ips and just access them directly from the load balancers.

Is it possible to access ec2 instances on a private subnet, with internet facing load balancers?
