How does AMIs work? Is creating AMI occur any cost?

I have created an AMI from my existing instance. Then I launched a windows EC2 instance from that AMI, After using it I stopped the instance. I know if instance is in stopped condition we just pay for storage associated wit that instance. My AMI is still in Available condition. Will it occur any extra cost to me?
