Centos Images raw vs qcow

I'm interested in being able to spawn centos servers on AWS that already come pre-configured with packages/services/files that I have installed/configured on the image. I'm at http://ift.tt/18r6IqE and I'm seeing that there are a number of different file extensions, including .raw, .qcow, .qcow2 etc.

What are the differences between these file types? Will I be able to create an AWS-eligible server image by configuring a centos install starting with images in either format?

Thank you for your time.
