Why does connecting to my AWS RDS instance through pgadmin count as two connections?

This isn't really causing me any problems, I'm just curious if anyone knows the answer. I'm monitoring my Amazon RDS instance, keeping track of the connections to it. Everything seems normal until I connect to it through pgadmin, then the connections jump up by two. I'm curious why that connection seems to count as two, or am I just thinking about db connections in the wrong way?
